Screwdriver

Ingredients

2 oz.

Vodka

Orange Juice

Directions

  1. Pour the Vodka in a Highball Glass with Ice

  2. Top with Orange Juice

  3. Stir for 13 Seconds

  4. Garnish with an Orange Slice

  5. Add a Straw

The Screwdriver, or in the U.K. "Vodka and Orange," is a very simple cocktail. It was invented by Americans fighting overseas in Turkey during World War II. A popular theory as to how it got it's name is because soldiers lacking spoons used screwdrivers to stir their drink.

French 77

Ingredients

1 oz.

Elderflower Liqueur

.25 oz.

Lemon Juice

Chilled Champagne (Sparkling Wine)

Directions

  1. Combine the Elderflower Liqueur and Lemon Juice in a Cocktail Shaker with Ice

  2. Shake for 15 Seconds

  3. Double Strain into a Champagne Flute

  4. Top with Champagne

  5. Stir for 5 Seconds

  6. Garnish with a Lemon Twist

Like the French 76, the French 77 is a variation of the French 75. Unlike the French 76, however, the drink had to be rebalanced because it substitutes a Liquor for a Liqueur. There is no Simple Syrup in this because sweetness comes from the Elderflower Liqueur.

Simple Syrup

Ingredients

2 Parts

Sugar

1 Part

Water

Splash

Vodka (Optional)

Directions

  1. In a Pot, Combine the Sugar and Water

  2. Heat until almost boiling while stirring constantly

  3. Once fully combined, pour into a glass jar or bottle.

  4. Add a Splash of Vodka to help make it more shelf stable

Simple Syrup is an ingredient used in many Cocktails. The name comes from the fact that the ingredients are very simple. The recipe above is a 2:1 Simple Syrup because it's more shelf stable than a 1:1 Simple Syrup. Of course that also means it's more sweet so adjust your cocktail recipes accordingly. You could also make a 1:1 Simple Syrup by adding Water or removing Sugar.
